How the Democrats Created the Financial Crisis by Kevin Hassett, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. If a serious 2005 Fannie and Freddie reform bill passed by the Senate Banking Committee had become law, then the world today would be different. The bill would have created a "world class regulator" to oversee the pair more like banks, strictly limiting their ability to take the excessive risks that brought them down. But the bill didn't become law for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it in party-line ranks and the Senate never got to vote on the matter.
