The Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise supports
American energy for Americans.

The most contentious American energy issue today is getting the oil from ANWR.

FIRST, what is ANWR?
ANWR is an acronym for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
Now…  A comparison:

What are we looking at?
The light green with white lines, of course, is the 48 contiguous United States
- "The Lower 48" to Alaskans.
The superimposed dark green mass is the state of Alaska, 663,267 square miles.
The orange and yellow areas together comprise ANWR, 19,049,236 acres.
The small yellow area is the "ANWR 1002 Area" where the oil is.
To see where the drilling area is, some perspective:

The little dot is where the drilling area is.
It's about 2,000 acres, about the size of Washington, D.C's Dulles Airport.

Here's more detail:

As you can see, the oil drilling area is on the ANWR Coastal Plain (shown in green).
The drilling area is the little red square on the left side of the green area.
It's not far from the Prudhoe Bay oil field and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

DEMOCRATS, LIBERALS, GREEN GROUPS
(AND THE BIG FOUNDATIONS THAT FUND THEM)
DON'T WANT YOU TO HAVE THE OIL IN ANWR.
SO THEY SHOW YOU GORGEOUS PICTURES OF ANWR LIKE THIS:

AND THIS:

AND THIS!
ISN'T ANWR BEAUTIFUL?  OF COURSE IT IS!
WHY SHOULD WE DRILL HERE AND DESTROY THIS MAGNIFICENT PLACE?
WELL, WE SHOULDN'T -
AND NOBODY EVER PLANNED ON DRILLING IN THESE GREAT PLACES.
BUT BIG OIL IS SO GREEDY!
WHY NOT?
FOR A VERY PRACTICAL REASON: THERE'S NO OIL THERE.
Do you remember the map?
The map showed that the proposed drilling area is in the ANWR Coastal Plain
Do those stunning photographs look like a coastal plain to you?
Of course not! That's the Brooks Range portion of the Refuge.
Here's the "1002 Area" looking far South at the distant Brooks Range:

Flat as a pancake. And we're not even to the drilling site yet!

The ANWR drilling site actually looks like this:

That's Springtime.

In Summer, it's more like this:

When it really greens up, it looks like this:

Mother Nature left parts of it a little bare after gurgling up some natural oil seeps:

Not exactly the Grand Canyon or Redwood National Park.

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF SCREEN SHOTS FROM GOOGLE EARTH:

That's one, here's the next:

FACE IT, THE DRILLING AREA IS A BARREN WASTELAND.
AND IT'S ALREADY GOT OIL SEEPS WITH NO HELP FROM BIG OIL.

AS WE SAID, DEMOCRATS, LIBERALS, GREEN GROUPS
(AND THE BIG FOUNDATIONS THAT FUND THEM)
DON'T WANT YOU TO HAVE THE OIL IN ANWR.
SO THEY PANIC OVER THE LOCAL WILDLIFE.
CERTAINLY, OIL DRILLING WILL WIPE OUT ALL LIVING BEINGS.

Here's what happened to the caribou when the oil rig went up in Prudhoe Bay:

Supply planes have to buzz the runway first to get the caribou off before they can land.

And the bears, oh my!

Why is the bear on that oil pipeline, Mommy?
Because Mr. Bear is as curious as you are, dear.
And Mr. Bear knows that caribou like to rest under the pipeline.
So it's kind of like the lunch line at school, dear.

Prudhoe Bay is very cold in the winter.

NOW, WHY ARE OPPONENTS IN SUCH A HISSY ABOUT DRILLING IN ANWR?

HERE'S A TABLE OF ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST:
Arguments For
Arguments Against

The oil is desperately needed to meet the needs of US citizens

The area would produce only a relatively small amount of oil. (Its not worth it.)

It decreases some dependence on foreign oil

It is the last pristine area in the U.S. and it contains ecologically sensitive wildlife and plants

Modern drilling techniques would do minimal damage, as demonstrated by existing oil wells

Would not lower oil price, and we don’t want it lowered anyway

The drilling area is only in a small region of the total area.

It doesn’t solve the root cause, which is runaway consumption, which we must stop

Billions of dollars in revenues would go to state and federal budgets

Distracts from the development of sustainable, ecologically sound alternatives

250K to 750K jobs would be created
Creates a false sense of security
Lower priced oil for Americans
A majority (55%) of Americans oppose drilling in ANWR
Positive economic impact for all states
It’s just profits for Big Oil, nobody else
Supported by over 75% of Alaskans

Alaska has only 670,053 people (2007), with only 15.6% Native population

ANWR
IT'S NOT ABOUT SCENIC BEAUTY OR FRAGILE ECOLOGY.
IT'S NOT ABOUT WILDLIFE.
IT'S ABOUT ENDING YOUR WAY OF LIFE AND CONTROLLING YOUR BEHAVIOR.

REMEMBER WHEN CLIMATE PROFITEER AL GORE SAID THAT
THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD WORK TO ARTIFICIALLY RAISE GAS PRICES
TO $5.00 A GALLON?
HE AND HIS FRIENDS WON.

BUT THERE'S THIS LITTLE PROBLEM: THE REST OF US.
ANWR IS GOVERNMENT LAND, MEANING IT BELONGS TO ALL AMERICANS,
NOT JUST YOU WHO CAN PAY $5.00 A GALLON FOR GAS WITHOUT BLINKING.
ANWR'S ENERGY IS OURS AS MUCH AS YOURS.

ADVICE FOR AL AND FRIENDS OF AL:
GET YOUR FILTHY GREEN HANDS OFF OUR ENERGY
DRILL NOW!
